  19. ---------------

  21.    This diskette contains drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who
  22.    have a Sound Blaster Pro MCV.
  23.  
  24.    This document outlines the installation of the Sound Blaster Pro MCV
  25.    drivers and provides helpful hints to solve common problems in
  26.    installing and using the drivers in Windows 3.1.

  48. III. Installing the drivers
  49. ---------------------------
  50.  
  51. Some PS/2 machines experience a "Bus timeout error" when running Windows
  52. 3.1 in enhanced mode.  If you have this problem, Copy VDMAD.386 to your 
  53. WINDOWS\SYSTEM sub-directory and change the following line under the [386Enh]
  54. section in your SYSTEM.INI file.

  61. NOTE
  62. ====
  63. If your PS/2 system uses the basic 8237 DMA controller (not the extended 82037
  64. DMA controller), you MUST manually add the line "MCADMA=off" to the [386Enh]
  65. section in your SYSTEM.INI file.
  66. e.g
  67.    [386Enh]
  68.    MCADMA=off
  69.  
  70. Currently, we have identified that the PS/2 system model 57 is using the basic 
  71. 8237 DMA controller while systems such as model 60, 70, 80 and 90 are using
  72. the extended 82037 DMA controller.
  73.  
  74. If you have difficulty implementing the above procedure, please change the line
  75. "DEVICE=VDMAD.386" back to "DEVICE=*VDMAD" and follows the steps to start 
  76. Windows in enhance mode.
  77.  
  78. a. Start Windows in standard mode first by entering " WIN /S" from the DOS
  79.    prompt.
  80. b. Exit from Windows.
  81. c. You can now start Windows in enhance mode as usual by entering "WIN" from
  82.    the DOS prompt.
  83.  
  84. Some PS/2 machines do not reset the Pro MCV card properly.  Models 55sx
  85. and 57sx are known to have this problem with the Sound Blaster Pro MCV.
  86. As a result, Windows 3.1 will not start in Enhanced mode.  To remedy this
  87.  
  88. problem, install SBPRESET into your AUTOEXEC.BAT file as outlined in
  89. SBPRESET.TXT.
  90.  
  91.    1. Start Windows v3.1.
  92.  
  93.    2. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  94.  
  95.    3. At a minimum, you should have the following driver names in the
  96.       Installed Drivers list:
  97.  
  98.         MIDI Mapper
  99.         Timer
  100.         [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  101.         [MCI] Sound
  102.  
  103.       If you have any Sound Blaster or Adlib drivers installed, please remove
  104.       them with the REMOVE button and restart Windows before continuing.  If
  105.       any of these drivers are not listed, please add them before continuing.
  106.       (See your Windows manual for details on adding these drivers.)  Make sure
  107.       you restart Windows after making changes to the driver list.
  108.  
  109.    4. Click on the ADD button.
  110.  
  111.    5. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  112.  
  113.    6. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  114.  
  115.    7. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the driver disk.
  116.  
  117.    8. Select Sound Blaster Pro MCV Auxiliary Audio and click on OK.
  118.  
  119.    9. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.  The default
  120.       I/O address is 220H.  If you have changed the jumper on your card to
  121.       240H, then select 240H.
  122.  
  123.   10. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  124.       "Don't Restart Now", then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  125.  
  126.   WARNING! - Steps 11 and 12 will OVERWRITE your existing MIDIMAP.CFG
  127.          configuration.  If you want to keep your existing configuration,
  128.          click on CANCEL and make a copy of MIDIMAP.CFG before continuing
  129.          the installation process.
  130.  
  131.   11. Select Sound Blaster Pro MCV MIDI Synthesizer and click on OK.
  132.  
  133.   12. Windows will ask if you want to use the current MIDIMAP.CFG
  134.       or install the new MIDIMAP.CFG - Select NEW and continue on.
  135.  
  136.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.
  137.       Repeat the instructions in step 9.
  138.  
  139.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  140.       "Don't Restart Now", then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  141.  
  142.   15. Select Sound Blaster Pro MCV Wave and MIDI and click on OK.
  143.  
  144.   16. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address, Interrupt, and
  145.       DMA channel. Choose the settings your card is set to and continue on.
  146.  
  147.   17. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  148.       "Restart Now".  Windows will then restart.
  149.  
  150.   18. Two additional Windows applications are provided.  They are MMJBOX.EXE
  151.       and SBPMIXER.EXE, please copy them into your Windows directory and for
  152.       easy execution, add them to a group file.
  153.  
  154. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  155. -----------------------------------------------------
  156.  
  157.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here are some things to
  158.    check before you call Technical Support.  Also, be sure to read the
  159.    "Important Notes" section below.
  160.  
  161. ** 1. If you installed Windows 3.1 using the "Express Installation,"  Windows
  162.       scanned your hard disk for programs to be installed.  As a result, older
  163.       versions of the Jukebox, and Mixer were installed if they were on your
  164.       hard disk at the time of installation.  Please remove these icons.  To
  165.       do this, click on the icon once to select it, then press the delete key.
  166.       Windows will ask you for confirmation.  Repeat for each icon.
  167.  
  168.    2. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the Windows SYSTEM
  169.       directory against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  Make
  170.       sure that the correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  171.  
  172.    3. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least have the
  173.       following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:
  174.  
  175.         Creative Sound Blaster Pro MCV Auxiliary Audio
  176.         Creative Sound Blaster Pro MCV MIDI Synthesizer
  177.         Creative Sound Blaster Pro MCV Wave and MIDI
  178.         MIDI Mapper
  179.         Timer
  180.         [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  181.         [MCI] Sound
  182.  
  183.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must install the
  184.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows
  185.       manual for more details).
  186.  
  187.    4. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the Program
  188.       Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command line box.  Examine the
  189.       [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.  They should look something like
  190.       this:
  191.  
  192.           [drivers]

  196.           MIDI=sbpfm.drv
  197.           Wave=spmcvsnd.drv

  205.    5. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or you get the error
  206.       message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI file or a
  207.       CD, be sure you have the following settings in the [mci] section of
  208.       SYSTEM.INI
  209.  
  210.           [mci]
  211.           WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  212.           Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  213.  
  214.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install the driver(s)
  215.       using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows manual for
  216.       instructions).  Do not type in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because
  217.       the files have to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.
  218.  
  219.    6. "This driver requires a newer version of Windows 3.1"  Your Windows
  220.       configuration has an old DMA driver loaded. Look for a line in the 
  221.       [386Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI that reads 'device=vdmad.386' or 
  222.       'device=vdmadx.386'.  Delete any of these lines and replace it with 
  223.       'device=*vdmad'.  Then restart Windows and reinstall the drivers.
  224.  
  225.       This error will also occur if there is a DMA conflict in your system.
  226.       Run TESTPMCV to check for correct I/O, interrupt, and DMA.
  227.  
  228.    7. "Cannot load the Sound Blaster Pro Wave and MIDI driver.  The driver
  229.       file may be missing..."  This error occurs when the D*river installation
  230.       program cannot locate the Sound Blaster Pro MCV card.  There may be
  231.       a conflict in your system or you selected the wrong I/O port address
  232.       when installing the drivers.  Run TESTPMCV to check the current
  233.       settings for your card.
  234.  
  235.  
  236. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  237. --------------------------------------------------
  238.  
  239.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.0 with
  240.    Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some special notes to
  241.    consider.
  242.  
  243.    1. If you have a line which reads "device=vsbd.386" in the [386Enh] section
  244.       of SYSTEM.INI, please delete it.  This is an old driver which has been
  245.       replaced by VSBPD.386.  The new driver will not work correctly until this
  246.       line is removed.
  247.  
  248.    2. Delete the file SBPMIXER.CPL in the Windows SYSTEM directory.  It is no
  249.       longer being supported.  The new SBPMIXER.EXE should now be used instead.
  250.  
  251.    3. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest SBPMIXER.EXE,
  252.       MMJBOX.EXE, SBPFM.DRV, SBPAUX.DRV ,SPMCVSND.DRV, MIDIMAP.CFG and VSBPD.386
  253.       have been copied to your hard disk.  Check the size and date of these
  254.       files against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  You can
  255.       delete any older versions that you find in your system.

  257.  
  258. VI. Important notes
  259. -------------------

  261.               *   I M P O R T A N T   *
  262.               * * * * * * * * * * * * *
  263.  
  264.    1. The drivers found in the file CREAT.EXE on Microsoft's BBS and in the
  265.       Microsoft Forum on CompuServe are not the latest drivers for Windows 3.1
  266.       and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  267.  
  268.    2. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit are not
  269.       the lastest drivers and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  270.  
  271.    3. We are including drivers that make use of Device Virtualization.  These
  272.       drivers will allow DOS Apps that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced
  273.       Mode.
  274.  
  275.       Please make sure that a line reading "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the
  276.       [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  277.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure the file VSBPD.386
  278.       is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  If it is not, copy it from the
  279.       Drivers Disk.
  280.  
  281.    4. If you get the error: "This driver requires a newer version of Windows
  282.       3.1" your Windows configuration has an old DMA driver loaded.  Look for

  290.    5. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows 3.0 with
  291.       Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  They will check the
  292.       Windows version and use the correct Sound Blaster section name to access
  293.       the settings in the SYSTEM.INI.
  294.  
  295.    6. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the SBPFM.DRV, please use the
  296.       MIDI MAPPER icon under Control Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  297.  
  298.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the drum channel.
  299.       If you are having problems with the FM synth not sounding "right", try
  300.       modifying the configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  301.  
  302.       The following is a list of the existing MIDI Map configurations and how
  303.       they are mapped:
